The Return of the King

By Siwale Chabala

There was drama in the air at the IZOD Center. Not only was it the home opener for the New Jersey Nets but a familiar star came back home, sort to speak. Vince Carter played his first game against the Nets this season. Too bad his game was short lived and the game wasn't compeititve as the Orlando Magic beat New Jersey 95-85. The game wasn't as close as the final score indicated. The Magic looked like the title contender they were for this upcoming season and the Nets, let's just say it will be a miracle making the playoffs. Dwight Howard led Orlando with 20 points and 22 rebounds. Former Nets, Vince Carter and Ryan Anderson chipped in with 16 points each. Courtney Lee had a good game for the Nets with 18 points and Devin Harris dropped 16 points, most of them late in the game.

The game started with a standing ovation for the former Net Vince Carter aka half man/half amazing. He began by putting on a show, scoring early and often. Yours truely was at the game but missed the first quarter because of that late traffic. It was a good atmosphere for the game and there was a special 50% off on hotdogs and drinks which I didn't take advantage off because I had the ice cream, go figure. The game was close early but you can clearly see the difference between the teams. Dwight Howard did whatever he wanted out there and Carter had 16 points in the first half but missed most of the second quarter with an ankle sprain Yes again, he got injured. The Magic didn't need him for this game as Ryan Anderson took over for Orlando in his place. Anderson showed why the Nets drafted him last year with his offensive versatility. The game showed the difference between an NBA title contender in Orlando and New Jersey whose trying to stay competitive.

Highlights of the game:

1. Vince Carter dunking it hard on Brooke Lopez. It was nasty, too bad I didn't see it until I got
home and clicked SportsCenter.

2. Anything that Dwight Howard did whether it was dunking on everybody or blocking anything
that came close to a shot attempt. He had this great block on Courtney Lee where he just
snatched the ball out the air, culfing it with one hand. Lots of oohssss and ahhhhhhhhhs.

3. Chris Douglas-Roberts aka CDR dunking on the whole magic team except for Howard. He
needs to be more aggressive in the Nets offense.

4. Rafer Alston matching up with Jason Williams. This was a Rucker Park or playground fan's
dream. It would have been great to see Skip to my Lou vs White Chocolate in the park or on
AND1 videos, probably would have been the best playground game ever played.
